Sometimes, no price is too high for the right music. Who would argue that the brilliant Taika Waititi paid too much for Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” to put the power into “Thor Ragnarok”? Not me. The Zep’s know what it’s worth and so did Mr Waititi.
So what about this week’s discussion of Kubrick’s decision to reject the original theme music for “2001: A Space Odyssey”?
They say opinion is divided. I think the division is between people who think “A Garden of Personal Mirrors” is complete tripe and people who think it is a joke. Most likely, Kubrick was just joking when he suggested that the “young publicist” should have a stab at writing the theme music. (Like asking Kellyanne Conway to bash out the theme music to Bohemian Rhapsody).
So let’s compare what was and what could have been:
“Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30” – Richard Strauss (Best played VERY LOUD)
“2001: A Garden of Personal Mirrors” Mike Kaplan, Naomi Gardner (Best played muted).
